When is the neces\u00adsa\u00adry nee\u00added? Need is when we lack what we requi\u00adre; when what we need does not come. And it is neces\u00adsa\u00adry to satis\u00adfy our needs \u2013 other\u00adwi\u00adse they beco\u00adme coer\u00adci\u00adon, rob\u00adbing us of our free\u00addom. The\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre, anyo\u00adne who suf\u00adfers from a&nbsp;lack of what they requi\u00adre is in need. The exis\u00adtence of tho\u00adse who lack what they need is meag\u00adre. They have only the hope that their need could still be tur\u00adned around. They have only the hope of the <em>neces\u00adsa\u00adry<\/em> rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time in which we live suf\u00adfers hard\u00adship. It is a&nbsp;<em>meag\u00adre time<\/em>, to quo\u00adte a&nbsp;line from the poet <em>Fried\u00adrich H\u00f6l\u00adder\u00adlin<\/em>. Its hard\u00adship is all the grea\u00adter becau\u00adse we hard\u00adly suspect it. It is unfelt and unna\u00admed becau\u00adse we do not know what we need \u2013 becau\u00adse the need pro\u00adli\u00adfe\u00adra\u00adtes hid\u00adden and becau\u00adse we no lon\u00adger feel the lack. We are accus\u00adto\u00admed to it becau\u00adse it has been with us for so long; so long that we no lon\u00adger per\u00adcei\u00adve what we lack and what is neces\u00adsa\u00adry for us as human beings, inde\u00aded, a&nbsp;rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What need per\u00adme\u00ada\u00adtes our living in the world of the pre\u00adsent? Super\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly, it is the cen\u00adtu\u00adry\u2019s mani\u00adfold dan\u00adgers, abo\u00adve all cli\u00adma\u00adte chan\u00adge and the des\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the natu\u00adral envi\u00adron\u00adment, not to men\u00adti\u00adon the impon\u00adder\u00ada\u00adbles of digi\u00adtal chan\u00adge and the insta\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of a&nbsp;glo\u00adbal eco\u00adno\u00admy that dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtes its pro\u00adfits high\u00adly uneven\u00adly. The aggres\u00adsi\u00adon of the super\u00adpower in the Far East and the growth of mili\u00adtant reli\u00adgious fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adta\u00adlism are also threa\u00adtening. Howe\u00adver, the\u00adse dan\u00adgers them\u00adsel\u00adves are not the real cri\u00adsis that is swee\u00adping through our world. The real cri\u00adsis is our ina\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty to deal with the dan\u00adgers of this cen\u00adtu\u00adry in an appro\u00adpria\u00adte way. We eit\u00adher igno\u00adre them or fix\u00ada\u00adte on them com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly \u2013 so much so that the real cri\u00adsis remains hid\u00adden; so much so that it dis\u00adap\u00adpears behind a&nbsp;blind spot in the coll\u00adec\u00adti\u00adve trance. This real cri\u00adsis is a&nbsp;cri\u00adsis of thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We fail to con\u00adsider thin\u00adking. Yet the way we think is extre\u00adme\u00adly ques\u00adtionable. Our way of thin\u00adking tempts us to sett\u00adle com\u00adfor\u00adta\u00adb\u00adly and cosi\u00adly into the meagre\u00adness of the pre\u00adsent. In doing so, we fol\u00adlow the human image of a&nbsp;psy\u00adcho\u00adlo\u00adgy that explains to us that we are beings of nee\u00addi\u00adness who draw their life ener\u00adgy from con\u00adstant\u00adly stri\u00adving to satis\u00adfy all pos\u00adsi\u00adble needs. That is why we have crea\u00adted the gre\u00adat, glo\u00adbal machi\u00adne of eco\u00adno\u00admics, which relia\u00adbly pro\u00addu\u00adces all the goods, mer\u00adchan\u00addi\u00adse or ser\u00advices that we need. Wit\u00adhout rea\u00adli\u00adsing it, we are trans\u00adfor\u00admed by the machi\u00adne and the thin\u00adking that under\u00adlies it: It turns us into con\u00adsu\u00admers, need-satis\u00adfiers or users, who\u00adse \u2018mea\u00adning of life\u2019 is redu\u00adced to mind\u00adless\u00adly and call\u00adous\u00adly con\u00adsum\u00ading the resour\u00adces of this&nbsp;world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real need is the lack of thought. It forces us to assi\u00admi\u00adla\u00adte to the machi\u00adne. But the more we obey this com\u00adpul\u00adsi\u00adon, the more we distance our\u00adsel\u00adves from what the need could still turn: from the neces\u00adsa\u00adry. What is the neces\u00adsa\u00adry? It is <em>not<\/em> the need. It is <em>not<\/em> some\u00adthing we need. Rather, it is what <em>our<\/em> need. It is that which awa\u00adkens in us all that which we do not need, but which makes us human wit\u00adhout need: that which makes us flou\u00adrish, that which ful\u00adfils us with mea\u00adning, that which makes us affirm life and the world. It is that which inspi\u00adres and ani\u00adma\u00adtes us \u2013 pre\u00adcis\u00ade\u00adly <em>becau\u00adse<\/em> we do not need or con\u00adsu\u00adme it. But what do we call this neces\u00adsi\u00adty that is hid\u00adden behind the blind spot of our thought pat\u00adterns? Sin\u00adce it reve\u00adals its\u00adelf through its effec\u00adti\u00adve\u00adness, and this effec\u00adti\u00adve\u00adness is not\u00adhing other than <em>enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm<\/em>, we call it <em>spi\u00adrit<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The need of the time is its lack of spi\u00adrit. Only very few are awa\u00adre of this need. Sin\u00adce we only con\u00adsider valuable what satis\u00adfies our needs, the mind usual\u00adly remains uncon\u00adside\u00adred. That is why thought\u00adless\u00adness pre\u00advails. That is why we con\u00adtent our\u00adsel\u00adves with eking out our time as con\u00adsu\u00admers. That is why we do not suf\u00adfer hard\u00adship from the lack of enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm. That is why we resem\u00adble the frog in its pot, which gets used to the rising tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtu\u00adre of the water until, wit\u00adhout rea\u00adli\u00adsing it, it is coo\u00adked. Our gar\u00adden pot is the ever-expan\u00adding machi\u00adne of the glo\u00adbal eco\u00adno\u00admy. And the water that is kil\u00adling us is the mind\u00adset that is powerful in it: it denies the rea\u00adli\u00adty of the mind, replaces enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm with func\u00adtion\u00ada\u00adli\u00adty and redu\u00adces huma\u00adni\u00adty to func\u00adtio\u00adning as a&nbsp;con\u00adsu\u00admer. The fact that we no lon\u00adger con\u00adsider this is alar\u00adming. The fact that we have <em>wea\u00adned<\/em> our\u00adsel\u00adves off thin\u00adking and <em>beco\u00adme accus\u00adto\u00admed<\/em> to the absence of the spi\u00adrit is the plight of the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But let\u2019s take a&nbsp;moment to rea\u00adli\u00adse what is hap\u00adpe\u00adning in the world: how dis\u00adhe\u00adar\u00adten\u00aded and unin\u00adspi\u00adred we are in the Covid pan\u00adde\u00admic, how litt\u00adle we con\u00adsider this cri\u00adsis an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty, how trap\u00adped we are in con\u00adven\u00adtio\u00adnal lines of thought even when they lead us to a&nbsp;dead end. If only we could just rea\u00adli\u00adse for once, we would see that we are com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly bewil\u00adde\u00adred and feel aban\u00addo\u00adned by all good spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ear\u00adlier gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons cal\u00adled their good spi\u00adrits <em>gods<\/em>. In view of this, we now suspect why <em>Nova\u00adlis<\/em> was able to say in an essay from 1797: \u2018Whe\u00adre the\u00adre are no gods, ghosts prevail.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ghosts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our habits are haun\u00adted by ghosts. The more accus\u00adto\u00admed we are to them, the more we dis\u00adac\u00adcus\u00adtom our\u00adsel\u00adves from the spi\u00adrit. The more they indul\u00adge us with what we belie\u00adve we need, the more we beco\u00adme blind to what could ful\u00adfil us. The more we get used to them, the more power we give them. The ghost\u00adly reign is the adver\u00adsi\u00adty of the pre\u00adsent, which is all the grea\u00adter becau\u00adse we are una\u00adwa\u00adre of&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who are the ghosts that live in our heads? Their names sound harm\u00adless: <em>Wan\u00adting<\/em>, <em>Kno\u00adwing<\/em>, <em>Doing<\/em>, <em>Using<\/em>. The oldest and most powerful of the\u00adse demons is <em>Wan\u00adting<\/em>. It domi\u00adna\u00adtes the thin\u00adking of the modern man. We con\u00adstant\u00adly pay homage to it, becau\u00adse we are firm\u00adly con\u00advin\u00adced that our will must be decisi\u00adve for our thin\u00adking, doing and lea\u00adving. Just as reli\u00adgious peo\u00adp\u00adle once belie\u00adved that the exis\u00adtence of the world was due to the will of a&nbsp;god, we belie\u00adve that we can shape our own exis\u00adtence by vir\u00adtue of our&nbsp;will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that the will within us deter\u00admi\u00adnes our iden\u00adti\u00adty was alre\u00ada\u00addy asser\u00adted by church father <em>Augus\u00adti\u00adne<\/em>. That the will depends on know\u00adledge, becau\u00adse other\u00adwi\u00adse it would be aiming at not\u00adhing, is a&nbsp;modern insight. It was made pos\u00adsi\u00adble by ratio\u00adnal sci\u00adence, which pro\u00admi\u00adses us sub\u00adjects the pro\u00ads\u00adpect of pro\u00advi\u00adding the know\u00adledge we need to rule over the world and sub\u00adju\u00adga\u00adte it to our will. For the phi\u00adlo\u00adso\u00adpher <em>Ren\u00e9 Des\u00adcar\u00adtes<\/em>, using know\u00adledge to beco\u00adme the <em>ma\u00eet\u00adre et pos\u00ads\u00ades\u00adseur de la natu\u00adre<\/em> was man\u2019s mis\u00adsi\u00adon and nobi\u00adli\u00adty. In doing so, he also con\u00adju\u00adred up two other spec\u00adtres that have been powerful in Euro\u00adpe sin\u00adce the 17th cen\u00adtu\u00adry: <em>making and<\/em> <em>using<\/em> \u2013 or to use two other names for them: <em>homo faber<\/em> and <em>homo eco\u00adno\u00admic\u00adus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Homo faber<\/em> is the man of action: the tech\u00adni\u00adci\u00adan and engi\u00adneer. We owe the tre\u00admen\u00addous pro\u00adgress of the last 300 years to him. But at the same time, we also have him to thank for the eco\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal cri\u00adsis of the pre\u00adsent. His mas\u00adter\u00adpie\u00adce is to fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly trans\u00adform the world. In his realm, living natu\u00adre beco\u00admes a&nbsp;resour\u00adce to be exploi\u00adted. He puts his skills to the test with it. He gives <em>will and<\/em> <em>know\u00adledge<\/em> two arms and two hands with which they demons\u00adtra\u00adte their power in and over the world. <em>Homo Faber<\/em> crea\u00adtes his world accor\u00adding to his <em>will<\/em> and based on <em>know\u00adledge<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His brot\u00adher, <em>Homo Oeco\u00adno\u00admic\u00adus<\/em>, exploits the world as a&nbsp;resour\u00adce. He, too, is a&nbsp;mas\u00adter of trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon, for in his realm ever\u00ady\u00adthing beco\u00admes an instru\u00adment in the ser\u00advice of his inte\u00adrests. He seeks an advan\u00adta\u00adge in order to suc\u00adceed in the mar\u00adket\u00adplace of life. He seeks power to pre\u00advail against his com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtors. He seeks know\u00adledge and infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon to con\u00adti\u00adnu\u00adal\u00adly maxi\u00admi\u00adse his benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Will,<\/em> <em>know\u00adledge,<\/em> <em>action<\/em> and <em>use<\/em> have con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adted the glo\u00adbal machi\u00adne in which we live wit\u00adhout rea\u00adli\u00adsing it. We have beco\u00adme so accus\u00adto\u00admed to it that we no lon\u00adger mind being wit\u00adhout good minds. They pam\u00adper us so well in satis\u00adfy\u00ading our needs that we no lon\u00adger feel the hard\u00adship of mind\u00adless\u00adness and fail to reco\u00adg\u00adni\u00adse what is neces\u00adsa\u00adry. They have wea\u00adned us so com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly from ful\u00adfilm\u00adent that we con\u00adsider our dis\u00adbe\u00adlief to be quite nor\u00admal. And so it should come as no sur\u00adpri\u00adse to us when they come tog\u00ade\u00adther the\u00adse days to con\u00ads\u00adtruct ano\u00adther spect\u00adre. The merit of reve\u00adal\u00ading its name goes to the best\u00adsel\u00adling aut\u00adhor <em>Juval Noah Hara\u00adri<\/em>. He has made it the title of a&nbsp;book: <em>Homo Deus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Homo Deus <\/em>com\u00adbi\u00adnes <em>will,<\/em> <em>know\u00adledge,<\/em> <em>action<\/em> and <em>use<\/em> to <em>per\u00adsist<\/em> or <em>endu\u00adre<\/em>. <em>Homo Deus<\/em> makes ever\u00ady\u00adthing sub\u00adser\u00advi\u00adent to this: his own con\u00adtin\u00adued exis\u00adtence, or more pre\u00adcis\u00ade\u00adly, his immor\u00adta\u00adli\u00adty. Accor\u00adding to <em>Hara\u00adri<\/em>, this is the ulti\u00adma\u00adte, hig\u00adhest goal of <em>Homo Deus<\/em>. It is, accor\u00adding to the pro\u00admi\u00adse of tho\u00adse who pay homage to <em>Homo Deus<\/em>, what will final\u00adly save huma\u00adni\u00adty from all adver\u00adsi\u00adty. After all, what could end\u00adan\u00adger him if death is con\u00adque\u00adr\u00aded? But this will only be pos\u00adsi\u00adble if <em>Homo Deus<\/em> takes <em>will,<\/em> <em>know\u00adledge,<\/em> <em>action<\/em> and <em>uti\u00adli\u00adty<\/em> into his ser\u00advice. His will must be focu\u00adsed not only on kno\u00adwing, but on beco\u00adming <em>omni\u00adsci\u00adent<\/em> with the help of big data and arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal intel\u00adli\u00adgence. His actions must be direc\u00adted towards beco\u00adming <em>all-powerful<\/em> with the help of advan\u00adced tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies such as gene\u00adtic engi\u00adnee\u00adring, bio\u00adtech or robo\u00adtics. Its pur\u00adpo\u00adse must be to gene\u00adra\u00adte the finan\u00adcial resour\u00adces nee\u00added to fight against death. If it suc\u00adceeds, <em>Homo Deus<\/em> will have repla\u00adced all the good spi\u00adrits of the past. Man will no lon\u00adger need any gods, becau\u00adse he hims\u00adelf has beco\u00adme neces\u00adsa\u00adry: a&nbsp;god-man and saviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in truth, <em>Homo Deus<\/em> is just a&nbsp;migh\u00adty spect\u00adre that lacks any power to save. He is just the opti\u00admi\u00adsed machi\u00adne ghost that uses human igno\u00adrance to heat up the gar\u00adden pot to lethal levels. If he pre\u00advails, we face com\u00adple\u00adte loss of spi\u00adrit. Mani\u00adpu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon, con\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adning and fana\u00adti\u00adcism will then take the place of real enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm. Ever\u00ady\u00adthing will beco\u00adme arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal, a&nbsp;pro\u00adduct. That is when the need will be grea\u00adtest. Only one thing will help. <em>Mar\u00adtin Heid\u00adeg\u00adger<\/em> said it in 1966: \u2018Only a&nbsp;god can save&nbsp;us.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The growing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Who is the god that can still save us? Cer\u00adtain\u00adly not the god that <em>Homo Deus<\/em> pres\u00adents its\u00adelf as the suc\u00adces\u00adsor to. Cer\u00adtain\u00adly not the almigh\u00adty, omni\u00adsci\u00adent, immor\u00adtal. This god is dead, as <em>Fried\u00adrich Nietz\u00adsche<\/em> aptly said. No, it is a&nbsp;dif\u00adfe\u00adrent god, a&nbsp;dif\u00adfe\u00adrent <em>spi\u00adrit of<\/em>. He is the oppo\u00adsi\u00adte of today\u2019s ghosts: not will, but <em>being<\/em>; not know\u00adledge, but <em>under\u00adstan\u00adding<\/em>; not making, but <em>crea\u00adting<\/em>; not using, but <em>cul\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading<\/em>; not the ghost of the machi\u00adne, but the Spi\u00adrit of the living world \u2013 the inspi\u00adring Spi\u00adrit, which we do not need and which, pre\u00adcis\u00ade\u00adly for that reason, can <em>fill<\/em> us like not\u00adhing&nbsp;else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one can crea\u00adte the spi\u00adrit that inspi\u00adres us. The spi\u00adrit blows whe\u00adre it wills. It can\u00adnot be forced, but it grows. It grows and blows whe\u00adre we <em>allow it<\/em> to grow and blow. It does not resi\u00adde in our will, but in the midd\u00adle of the world \u2013 or, more pre\u00adcis\u00ade\u00adly, bet\u00adween us and the world, as <em>Mar\u00adtin Buber<\/em> said. When we turn to the things of this world in a&nbsp;spi\u00adrit of <em>under\u00adstan\u00adding<\/em> \u2013 when we allow our\u00adsel\u00adves to be touch\u00aded by them and pay atten\u00adti\u00adon to what they have to say to us, then the dimen\u00adsi\u00adon of the spi\u00adrit opens up to us and we can <em>draw from<\/em> it. This <em>dra\u00adwing<\/em> is not a&nbsp;making, in which a&nbsp;will powerful\u00adly mani\u00adfests its\u00adelf. It is a&nbsp;respon\u00adse to what peo\u00adp\u00adle, things and phe\u00adno\u00adme\u00adna in this world have to say to us. It is a&nbsp;respon\u00adsi\u00adble crea\u00adti\u00adon that remains bound to what it responds to. It is not a&nbsp;use, but a&nbsp;<em>cul\u00adti\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon<\/em> that turns to what is: it nur\u00adtures and cares for it so that it can unfold its poten\u00adti\u00adal and flou\u00adrish. That is the cul\u00adtu\u00adral achie\u00adve\u00adment of the mind. Whe\u00adre\u00adver it blows, it bears wit\u00adness to its crea\u00adti\u00adve power. What it crea\u00adtes is not some\u00adthing that is wil\u00adled and made, but a&nbsp;growth that has come into being \u2013 nou\u00adris\u00adhed by enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm and devo\u00adti\u00adon to the being of the world. It is not useful, but meaningful. It is beau\u00adtiful. \u2018Beau\u00adty will save the world,\u2019 said <em>Fyo\u00addor Dostoyevs\u00adky<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The saving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beau\u00adty saves becau\u00adse it inspi\u00adres us. Tho\u00adse who are addres\u00adsed by the beau\u00adtiful ans\u00adwer with an uncon\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal yes: yes, it is good. Yes, it is meaningful. This yes is an expres\u00adsi\u00adon of enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm. It is not made, but grown: in the encoun\u00adter with the beau\u00adtiful, which bears wit\u00adness to the spi\u00adrit of life and which has ari\u00adsen in a&nbsp;crea\u00adti\u00adve encoun\u00adter with the being of the world. <em>H\u00f6l\u00adder\u00adlin<\/em> knew this. Whe\u00adre\u00adver enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm takes hold of a&nbsp;per\u00adson, as he wri\u00adtes in his elegy \u2018Bread and Wine\u2019, \u2018words must ari\u00adse like flowers\u2019. This is the poet spea\u00adking, but <em>all artists<\/em> know that whe\u00adre\u00adver the spi\u00adrit of life takes hold of them and inspi\u00adres them, a&nbsp;beau\u00adtiful work matures within them. Art is not made, but grows. And so does that which&nbsp;saves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But is it real\u00adly gro\u00adwing? Is it gro\u00adwing in the machi\u00adne that holds us all in its grip \u2013 so tight that we no lon\u00adger per\u00adcei\u00adve the dan\u00adger that threa\u00adtens us and fail to reco\u00adg\u00adni\u00adse the need to turn to the spi\u00adrit? Are we not blind to the exis\u00adtence of the living world? And does this blind\u00adness not cul\u00admi\u00adna\u00adte in our will to break the oldest law of natu\u00adre: the law of fini\u00adten\u00adess and mor\u00adta\u00adli\u00adty? Even a&nbsp;glo\u00adbal pan\u00adde\u00admic does not seem to awa\u00adken us from the trance into which the quiet whir\u00adring of the machi\u00adne has long sin\u00adce plun\u00adged us. We hear about death and mor\u00adta\u00adli\u00adty, but we do not allow them to tell us any\u00adthing. We place our hope in eco\u00adno\u00admics and tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy and do not hear the call of life, which, in the face of mass dying, tells us what the god Apol\u00adlo once told tho\u00adse see\u00adking advice in the sanc\u00adtua\u00adry of Del\u00adphi: \u2018Know thys\u00adelf!\u2019 We do not under\u00adstand that through death \u2013 the ulti\u00adma\u00adte dan\u00adger \u2013 the spi\u00adrit of life throws us the sheet anchor: \u2018You are mor\u00adtal, human\u2019, he calls to us his fri\u00adend\u00adly <em>memen\u00adto mori<\/em>: \u2018You are part of the gre\u00adat, eter\u00adnal natu\u00adre. Stick to it and not to your will! Seek ful\u00adfilm\u00adent not in the satis\u00adfac\u00adtion of your needs, but in the mea\u00adning and beau\u00adty of this world!
